Concrete in the Birmingham area has to handle hot, humid summers, occasional hard freezes, and heavy clay that expands and contracts with moisture. The slabs that crack in the first year usually failed because the base wasn't compacted, the mix was wrong, or the joints weren't cut in time.

We pour driveways, patios, sidewalks, and equipment pads with a compacted gravel base, proper reinforcement, control joints spaced correctly for the slab size, and a finish suited to the use. A broom finish gives traction for driveways and walkways; a smooth trowel finish works for garage floors and patios; stamped or exposed aggregate finishes are available for decorative work. On equipment pads, dumpster pads, and commercial slabs we often use a thicker pour, heavier rebar on a tighter grid, and fiber reinforcement in the mix. We also coordinate the pour schedule so the concrete isn't placed in the heat of the day without proper curing — that single decision prevents a lot of surface cracking and weak corners.

The finish changes both the look and the function. Broom finish is the standard for driveways and walkways because it's slip-resistant and affordable. Smooth trowel is common for garage floors, carport slabs, and patios where appearance matters. Stamped concrete can mimic brick, stone, or slate for patios and entryways, though it costs more and needs a good sealer every few years.

Exposed aggregate gives a decorative, skid-resistant surface by washing away the top layer of cement paste to reveal the stone underneath. It's popular for pool decks and high-end patios.
