01 / FIELD NOTE

Why Alabama gravel driveways fail — and how we prevent it

Gravel driveways in the Birmingham metro fail for the same three reasons: water, weak base, and the wrong stone. Alabama gets 55+ inches of rain a year, and if a driveway is flat or drains toward the house, every storm moves stone downhill and leaves ruts. Red clay underneath turns slick when wet, so a thin layer of gravel on native soil just sinks and disappears.

We fix that by cutting a proper crown into the driveway — typically a 2–3 inch rise in the center so water sheds to both sides — and building a compacted base course before the top stone ever goes down. On long rural drives we add ditches and cross-culverts at low spots so water crosses under the driveway instead of running down it. The result is a drive that stays drivable through spring rains and doesn't need new stone every year.

02 / FIELD NOTE

The right stone for the job: crusher run vs. washed gravel vs. rip rap

Crusher run is our go-to base material. It's a mix of stone dust and angular gravel that locks together under compaction and forms a hard, drivable surface. We use it for the base course on almost every driveway because it doesn't wash as easily as clean stone.

Washed #57 gravel or pea gravel goes on top when the customer wants a cleaner, lighter-colored finish. It doesn't compact as hard, so it works best as a 1–2 inch top dressing over crusher run. Rip rap — large angular stone — is reserved for ditch lining, culvert outlets, and areas where water velocity would wash smaller stone away. We match the stone to the spot instead of dumping the same load everywhere.

03 / FIELD NOTE

Crown, ditches, and culverts: the drainage that saves the driveway

A gravel driveway is only as good as its drainage. Crown is the subtle hump in the center that pushes water to the edges. Ditches catch that water and carry it away from the driveway. Culverts let water cross under the drive at dips or where a natural drainage path intersects the road.

On a typical residential driveway in Hoover or Vestavia Hills, crown and a short side ditch may be enough. On a 500-foot farm drive in Warrior or Oneonta, we may need multiple culverts and a rolling grade to keep water from concentrating. We always walk the path after a rain when possible so we can see where water actually goes, not just where the owner thinks it goes.

04 / FIELD NOTE

What a new gravel driveway costs in Central Alabama

Pricing depends on length, width, base prep, stone type, and whether we need culverts or extensive grading. A short residential driveway refresh — scrape, regrade, and re-stone — sits at the low end. A new 200-foot farm drive with clearing, grading, base, top stone, and a culvert lands higher. Long commercial drives or multiple equipment pads are priced by the job.

We quote every driveway after looking at the site or reviewing photos and a map. The quote includes clearing, grading, stone, compaction, and any drainage work, with dump fees and delivery in the written number. If you already have a driveway that just needs a fresh layer, we can price that separately — how long it takes depends on the length of the drive, the shape the base is in, and how much stone the surface needs.
